A Lee Highway, Virginia landmark, Owned and Operated by Lily and Woodrow Wells. This Motor Lodge, as they were called, lived with glory in its day, Constructed in 1946 and was taken down in the fall of 2009. as were so many along Lee Highway constructed in that era, The Hi-Way Motel stood for approximately 48 years at Exit 13 area, We stayed there one time on our way into town, in the early 80's, it was so quaint, the Becon stood at Exit 10 until 2013. There were so many back in the day along the "Highway" now only a few are left to experience.
Col. Harland Sanders once sold Kentucky Fried Chicken in the restaurant on the top floor of the motel, along with his original Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant located in Corbin KY and another location in Ashville, NC. View the Menu copy, Courtesy of Tim Buchanan, Bristol Historical.
We here at RC's Storage had the privilege of meeting Lily Wells and her lovely family, Her niece wanted Mrs. Wells to experience the new paint job and see the location in person of the Landmark that was her life. We were thrilled to experience such a proud day.
It is an experience to learn of all the people who remember the motel and especially the sign we have had so many visitors, photographers, students, and lovers of the past stop and enjoy the Robert E. Lee Motel sign and the many more spread across 6 acres of buildings. Come experience it for your self.
